  • Yua Hair is a community, platform and studio specialised in storytelling around textured hair through an approach integrating cultural research, creative direction and immersive experiences. We aim to meaningfully connect consumers to innovative brands expanding the range of possibilities for textured hair by curating immersive, creative and engaging commercial and educational experiences backed by consumer insights. Our mission is to reimagine the way individuals interact with afro-textured hair.

"Yua" means "sun" in Baoulé, a language spoken by the Baoulé people of Côte d'Ivoire. This name is a tribute to the way textured hair grows upward, defying gravity and framing the face. Additionally, "Yua hair"  translates to "your hair" in English, a fun wordplay.

  • STORY

Yua Hair was officially launched in July 2023 by Marie-Céline Agossa, a creative director, and independent researcher driven by a passion for afro hair, fashion, culture, and their intersections within African and Afro-diasporic contexts. Yua Hair is more than just a platform; it’s a cultural movement drawing inspiration from vintage Black glamour while staying firmly rooted in contemporary realities. It serves as a bridge connecting the past, present, and future of textured hair, fostering a dialogue around its cultural significance while exploring solutions for its future.

  • VISION

  • Collaboration is at the heart of our process. We actively collaborate with platforms, creatives, institutions, hair professionals, and innovative brands to create impactful projects that expand the textured hair experience. We are on a mission to carve out a distinct role as a cultural curator, community hub, and creative studio for textured hair enthusiasts. From January to September 2024, we have hosted open conversations on hair, culture and business in Côte d'Ivoire fostering a deeper understanding of the cultural and economic dimensions of the hair industry, while exploring the drivers behind consumption habits in this space. Yua Hair’s work extends beyond discussions, as we also spearhead projects that enhance the hair experience for consumers, addressing challenges they face in the industry.

WORK

Since our community launch in July 2023, we have collaborated with and delivered work for brands, artists, creatives, production houses, institutions and publications across London, Paris, Abidjan, and Lomé. The platform and studio has been featured in Vogue, Allure, Nowness and Byredo Bal d’Afrique magazine.
